Photobiomodulation for Effective Concussion Recovery

Concussions affect millions of people worldwide each year, often leading to prolonged symptoms that disrupt daily life. Traditional treatments focus on rest and symptom management, but recent advances suggest that photobiomodulation (PBM), particularly using devices like the Avant laser, may offer a promising addition to concussion recovery. This blog explores how low-level laser therapy, otherwise called Photobiomodulation, can support brain healing and improve outcomes for those recovering from concussions.

What Is Photobiomodulation and How Does It Work?

Photobiomodulation uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate cellular function and promote healing. Unlike high-powered lasers that cut or burn tissue, low-level lasers gently interact with cells to trigger beneficial biological responses.

When the red light (laser) is directed at the head, PBM can:

  • Increase mitochondrial activity, boosting energy production in cells

  • Reduce inflammation by modulating immune responses

  • Enhance blood flow, improving oxygen and nutrient delivery

  • Support neurogenesis, the growth of new neurons

These effects create an environment that encourages the brain to repair itself more efficiently after injury.

Why Concussions Benefit from Photobiomodulation

Concussions cause complex biochemical changes in the brain, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and impaired cellular metabolism. These disruptions contribute to symptoms like headaches, dizziness, cognitive difficulties, and fatigue.

PBM targets these underlying issues by:

  • Reducing oxidative stress: Light therapy helps neutralize harmful free radicals that damage brain cells.

  • Calming inflammation: By regulating inflammatory pathways, PBM limits secondary injury to brain tissue.

  • Boosting cellular energy: Enhanced mitochondrial function supports neurons in recovering and maintaining normal activity.

  • Promoting neural repair: PBM encourages the formation of new neural connections, aiding cognitive recovery.

This multi-faceted approach addresses the root causes of concussion symptoms rather than just masking them.

The Avant Laser and Its Role in Treatment

The Avant laser is the laser we use at Brain Hub, and is a a specialized device designed for low-level laser therapy with precise control over wavelength and power. It delivers near-infrared light, which penetrates the scalp and skull to reach brain tissue effectively.

Patients often report feeling nothing at all, or just a very mild warming sensation but no discomfort. Treatment is painless and requires no downtime.

Considerations for PBM

If you or a loved one is exploring photobiomodulation for concussion recovery, keep these points in mind:

  • Expectations: PBM supports healing but is not an instant cure. Recovery takes time and patience, and a combined therapeutic approach.

  • Combine therapies: Physical therapy, and other concussion related therapies can further support the effectiveness of PBM.

  • Safety: PBM is both FDA and TGA-cleared for devices like the Avant laser to guarantee safety and effectiveness.

Photobiomodulation is at the cutting edge of concussion rehabilitation, and a staple in my concussion care protocols. If you would like to chat more on concussion recovery, don't hesitate to book a Get Started Call.
